Difference #1. The Way They Are Built
Both chain-drive and belt-drive systems use the same basic construction for about half of the system. They both employ a roller chain that your garage door moves upon and a pulley system for opening and closing your garage door.
What is different is how the systems work once you activate your garage door with the garage door opener. With a chain system, a chain will drive the force that allows your garage door to open or close. With a belt system, coming out of the motor is a belt typically made from either polyurethane or rubber that propels your garage door up and down.
Difference #2. The Sound They Make
Both systems use roller chains as the main leverage for opening and closing your garage door. The roller chains, although made of leather, if properly cleaned and lubricated, don't have to make that much noise. You are never going to enjoy a silent operating system, however, as the chains are metal.
Between the two operating systems, a chain-drive system is going to make more noise, as the system that pulls the roller chain is also made of metal. This dual-metal system tends to be louder than a belt drive system. As a belt drive system is made from either rubber or polyurethane, it doesn't make as much noise.
Difference #3. The Strength of the System
Finally, the strength of each system varies greatly. A chain-drive opening system is not that likely to fail, due to the strength of the train. However, you will need to take care of the chain. You will need to oil the chain and ensure that the chain is properly aligned. If you don't oil or keep the chain aligned, the metal can wear away on the system.
With a belt-drive system, it should last for a long time. However, you need to be aware of the sensitive nature of a belt-drive system. You will need to grease and adjust it as well. If the rubber or polyurethane ever looks like it is wearing down, you will need to replace the belt.
