Accidents happen from time to time, and some repairs are difficult to do on your own. One repair that may be easier than you think is replacing a window in your garage door. If a ball goes through the window or someone tries to break in through it, the window will need to be replaced right away. Use the following guide to learn how to easily replace the glass on your own within just a few short hours.

Take Measurements

Use a tape measure to determine the width and length of the window. Not all windows in garage doors are the same size, so getting the proper measurements is important.

Buy the New Window

Visit a home improvement store to find the replacement window you need. Look at the dimensions of each window to find the right one to suit your needs. There will more than likely be insulated and non-insulated options available. Choose the insulated option because it will help to hold in heat during the cold winter months.

Clear the Area

Use a small broom and dustpan to remove any broken glass around the area where the window was broken. Be sure to remove glass from the door itself, the frame of the window, and the floor.

Turn off the Power

Go to the breaker box for your home and turn off power to the garage door. You want to be as safe as possible and make sure that there is no way for the garage door can open while you are working on it.

Remove the Frame

Place painters tape around the edges of the frame on the outside of the door. When you loosen the screws to remove the frame, the frame that is on the outside of the door will become loose and would fall if you did not tape it in place. Find the screws on the side of the frame that is in the garage. Loosen them with a screwdriver by turning them to the left. Once they are loose, pull the frame free from the door.

Remove the Glass

Make sure you have on work gloves to ensure that your fingers are protected. Remove the glass from the window. The glass should slide out of the frame quickly and easily. Use the broom and dustpan to clear out any leftover shards from the window.

Replace the Glass

Take the new piece of glass and place it in the window carefully. Ensure that it is flush against the backside of the frame.

Replace the Frame

Place the side of the frame that is loose back on the window and use the screwdriver to tighten the screws by turning them toward the right. Be sure to tighten the screws as much as you can to ensure that the glass stays in place. Go outside of the garage and remove the painters tape from the door.

Once you have tightened the frame, the window should be as good as new. You can use the garage door as you always have, and the glass will stay in place. Make sure you dispose of the broken glass in a safe way to ensure that no one is accidentally hurt by it.
