Garage Door Opener: Why It Won't Work & What To Do About It

Blog

Did you press the button on your garage door opener only to find that it did not open or close the door? There are several different things that can be wrong that may be simple fixes to bring things back to a working condition. Find out what can cause a garage door opener to stop working and what you can do to fix it.

What Can Cause a Garage Door Opener to Stop Working?

The first thing you should do is make sure the battery inside the garage door opener is not the reason it is not functioning. Remove the back cover and replace the battery. You may need to use a screwdriver to remove the battery cover so make sure you have one on hand that can fit inside the screws on your specific opener. Garage door openers often require AAA, AA or the round batteries that are found in watches.

You can also look at the sensor cover on the top of the opener to determine if it is dirty or not. Underneath the cover that is that is usually clear (colored in some cases) are sensors that must connect with the sensors on the garage door. Dirt can prevent the invisible infrared beam from the sensors from properly connecting. Use a damp cloth with warm water and any household detergent to clean the sensor cover off.

If nothing works after changing the battery and cleaning the sensor cover, there may be a problem with the garage door. However, sometimes garage door openers simply become old and need a replacement.

How Can a Garage Door Prevent an Opener from Working?

The sensors on the garage door are as important as the ones on the opener, so you must make sure they are not damaged or broken. Locate the sensors on both sides of the door at about two inches from the ground.

Clean the sensor covers the same way you cleaned the garage door opener cover. Press the button on the opener to see if it will work now. If not, try resetting the sensors on the garage door to see if it solves the problem.

To reset garage door sensors unplug the door for no less than a minute. Replace the plug in the outlet and try to use the opener. If nothing you try seems to work, contact a garage door specialist so he or she can get to the root of the problem and make repairs.
